MAJOR GENERAL CHARLES M. HOOD, JR. (Retired)

Major General Charles M. Hood, Jr., retired from military service in May 1995 following his tour as Adjutant General of the United States Virgin Islands National Guard. General Hood was born in and attended school in Richmond, Virginia. Graduating from Armstrong High School, he attended Hampton Institute now called Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics. He later attended and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Master of Arts Degree in Human Relations.

In January 2006, the District Governor for the Georgia District of Kiwanis International selected him to serve out the remaining term as Lieutenant Governor for Division 16 and achieved Distinguish status. He has served as Secretary Treasurer of the Georgia District of Kiwanis International, led to his role as Governor of the District, 2012-2013, where he achieved Distinguished Governor status.

General Hood began his military career in 1959 upon completion of the Senior Reserve Officer Training Corps and entered active service in February 1960. As a Second Lieutenant, General Hood completed the Field Artillery Officers Basic Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He later attended and completed his Field Artillery/Air Defense Officer Advanced Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and Fort Bliss, Texas. Other military education includes completion of the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and the Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. Following graduation from the War College he became a member of the faculty, teaching courses in management and leadership. Throughout his 35 years of military service, General Hood completed two tours of duty in Vietnam. He served as Battery Commander in the 6th Battalion, 27th Field Artillery and as Division Artillery and G3 adviser to the 7th Division of Vietnam.

General Hood has also held a variety of important command and staff positions culminating in his appointment by President George H.W. Bush to serve as Adjutant General in the United States Virgin Islands National Guard, following his retirement from the active army after completing 30 years of service. While serving as Adjutant General, General Hood also performed duties as the Executive Director of Emergency Management for the Territory of the U.S. Virgin Islands. He simultaneously taught courses in management and group processes as Adjunct Professor in the Graduate School of the University of the Virgin Islands. Other key assignments held prior to retirement include: Deputy Chief of Staff Operations, Second United Sates Army, Fort Gillem, GA; Chief, War Plans Division, J5, U.S. Forces Command, Fort McPherson, GA; Deputy Director, J5, U.S. Forces Command, Fort McPherson, GA; and Commander, 210th Field Artillery Brigade, VII Corps, Europe. His Military decorations include: Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, the Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the U.S. Virgin Islands' Distinguished Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Honor Medal, First Class.

 

The General is married to the former Marion Elaine Overton of Norfolk, Virginia. They have three children, Charles III, Brian, and Cheryl with two daughters-in-law, Christina and Tammie, one son-in-law, Rev. James S. Miller SR, and eight grandchildren, Brittany, Kristin, Brian, Jr., James, Jr., Madison, Charles Grant, II, Reagan, and Morgan. They have one great-grandson, Michael.
